IC Design

Elecronic design and test has progressed significantly in the last 50 years or so. The invention of transistors and integrated circuits has led to an incredible growth in the electronic industry. In the eighties, engineers have realised the advantages of designing custom integrated circuits that are tailored to a particular system or applications rather than using standard integrated circuits.

Modern integrated circuits can be complete systems that include a number of standard ICs and an extra logic built from a few millions of transistors, a number of memory blocks and hundreds of input/output buffers connecting these chips to other devices or boards at a very high speed. These can be classifieg into four main categories:

  1. Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC)s
  2. Gate Array Based ASICs
  3. Programmable Logic Devices (PLD)s
  4. Field Programmale Gate Arrays (FPGA)s

This training course covers all these design types and gives the students a broad knowledge and experience in each of these types, and couples that with the design flow. The practical aspects of the IC design and manufacturing  will be covered by a number of design practice assignments using state-of-the-art tools.
